Here is a heartening story. In the fall of 1961 David Hvidston enrolled at Iowa and in time became a political science major. Financial troubles caused him to leave school right before graduating. He soon found himself in the armed forces and stationed in Vietnam. While overseas he completed his final requirement through a correspondence course, but never followed up with the University. After leaving the service he went to work for JC Penney and 35 years later, in 2004, he retired from the company, serving last as the store manager in Carbondale, Illinois. Looking through some old papers recently he came across his correspondence course records and decided to contact Iowa. The Registrar’s Office informed him that he had the necessary course work to graduate and all he needed to do was formally apply for his degree. Well, he happily did so and was granted his degree this spring, post-dated to 1969. We congratulate David and welcome him to our alumni family.
