Workers moving a column into place during early construction (c 1901) on New Collegiate Hall. Years later the building was renamed in honor of President Charles Ashmead Schaeffer who died shortly after groundbreaking in 1898. Due to a dispute between the architect and contractor the building was not opened until January of 1902.

The first floor lobby outside the Women's Lounge (c 1905). The columns were later removed and the area closed in. During the recent renovation the columns were restored and a seal placed between them (see photos in the Construction and Color Photo sections).

A view of the south stairwell c 1905. Skylights on the roof, three stories above this point, helped bring natural light into the hallways on each floor.

In the lobby outside the Women's Lounge on the first floor (c 1910). This room was later used as one of the building's two large lecture rooms. A few years before the renovation the room was upgraded to include tiered-seating, modern student tables, and multimedia equipment.

Students heading east from the south entrance (c 1910). Even then, downtown establishments were located right across the street.

An alumni gathering on the lawn in front of the east entrance (c 1910). Most pictures of Schaeffer, particularly early ones are of its east side. Aside from the east side being more picturesque, a small building on the west side of Schaeffer known as the "Water Closet" made photos from that side less desirable.

Electric lighting had replaced gas by the time this photo of the library was taken (c 1910).

A view of the east side of the Hall of Liberal Arts as Schaeffer as known around this time (c 1922). Note the lack of shrubbery by the steps in the left of the picture. By the mid-1920s all five Pentacrest buildings were constructed on what for a time was called "The Five Spot."

Taking a test in the auditorium. Notice the balcony. From architect's drawings it appears the auditorium was on the second floor and the balcony on the third. The College of Liberal Arts administrative offices now occupy this area on the second floor and a computer lab is located in the filled in area on the third floor.
