A nice view of the east entrance
(c 1924). Note the ivy on the wall to the right of the entrance.
From the very start, the words "Liberal Arts" have adorned the building's
front. |
|
Professor Benjamin F.Shambaugh,
who specialized in political science, teaching his popular Campus Course
(c 1930). The room was specially designed for the course and included a
reference library, works of art, music, and comfortable chairs. Many
of these chairs were refinished during the renovation and were returned
to offices throughout the building. |
|
Professor Shambaugh's lecture
room combined the informality of a library reading room with the seating
of a lecture hall. Here we see students using the room's library facilities
(c 1930). |
|
An early view of the large
classroom on the ground floor (c 1940). Though not in classrooms, many
of these desks remained in use until the renovation. Some of the building's
original slate blackboards were preserved in the renovation and are still
in use. |
|
Students crossing the Pentacrest
on the way to class (c 1940). Several names for this area were proposed,
but it was a student who coined the term "Pentacrest." |
|
Students still crossing the
Pentacrest on the way to class (c 1950). This time a view of Schaeffer's
north entrance. |
|
A nice "college-like" view
of the east entrance (c 1960). Air-conditioning units would soon begin
popping out of windows. The renovation has cleaned up Schaeffer's
exterior by eliminating the need for individual air conditioners thanks
to central air. |
|
Students on the walkway leading
from Schaeffer (c 1960). In 1970, the Liberal Arts Dean's office was occupied
for a time by student protesters. |
|
Students leaving the north
entrance of Schaeffer shortly before the building was closed for the renovation
(c 1995). The directional signs were not replaced after the renovation,
but the students seem to have managed. |
|
A view of the east entrance
at about the time of the renovation (c 1995). |
