During the two-year renovation, Schaeffer Hall departments survived in temporary quarters scattered across the east half of campus and downtown area. After all the departments and administrative units left the building, plywood barriers were erected to limit access to construction workers. You can see the backside of the barrier just outside the south entrance door.

One of the first jobs of the renovation was the removal of all the wall and surface materials that had been installed over the years. An office number tag on the wall in the background seems to indicate that this work is taking place on the second floor.

The buildings seen in the windows place this area on the southeast corner of the building, probably on the second floor. This area had been a large room occupied by the Political Science teaching assistants before the renovation.

This cleared area is on the northwest corner of the building looking south. The odd pattern on the ceiling shows where walls had been installed to convert a classroom into three offices.

Another cleared area showing how all the nonload-bearing walls were removed. Due to the total gutting of the building, Fall 1995 semester classes were rescheduled and for the next two years other buildings carried the extra class load.

All the windows in Schaeffer had been replaced prior to the renovation. Although the interior walls and surface areas were removed, care had to be taken not to damage the new windows. This area is on the north end of the building and the Old Capitol can be seen in the window.

This view from south end of Schaeffer looking north shows that the walks around the building were still plowed in winter. Even so, the lack of activity around the east entrance is evident from the snow left on the steps.

Building plans on a table in a partially cleared area. The renovation plans called for nearly all departmental and administrative offices to be located on the second and third floors.

Work progressing on the first floor. The Dean's offices and other administrative units were located on the first floor prior to the renovation. Now nearly all space on the first and ground floors is devoted to classroom use.
