Alex Ingham, from Clinton, Iowa, entered the University as a Presidential Scholar.  This is an award given to incoming students who show especially great academic promise, and Alex has lived up to this expectation, both in Political Science and in International Studies (his second major).  This success has led to student mentoring assignments, both as a Writing Fellow, who helps other students improved their academic writing, and as a Presidential Scholar Mentor, who tutors other undergraduates.  In addition, he has served as a member and teaching assistant in the Iowa Policy Research program (which provides policy research to members of the state legislature).  Other large commitments include work on the Student Advisory Committee and work on the Honors Advisory Committee, both serving the entire College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.  Alex twice has studied abroad, spending a summer term in Valladolid, Spain and spending a fall term studying Mandarin in China.  In his spare time, he has plunged into American electoral politics, first as a county organizer for one of the 2008 presidential campaigns in Iowa and second as the deputy field director for a 2008 congressional campaign in Colorado.  Finally, Alex is active in the campus Environmental Coalition and in a major charitable undertaking organized each year by the Iowa students.
