Andy Brehm grew up in Mount Vernon, Iowa, where as a five sport high school athlete he certainly became known to the people of the community. Other high school activities included service as a delegate to the National Council on Youth Leadership and as a delegate to Hawkeye Boys State. This last experience, which came on the eve of his entrance into the University, inspired a much greater interest in political life. More than that, it inspired him actually to run for office. Last autumn term, just when this freshman was dealing with the newness of university life, Andy mounted a campaign against the incumbent (and previously unchallenged) mayor of Mount Vernon. Andy wanted to make it a contest. He had entered too late to get his name on the ballot, but the local newspaper gave him sufficient coverage so that his write-in campaign seemed promising. In the end, however, victory was not to be. He got 76 votes (17 percent of the total) – not a contest, but still an excellent learning experience. Perhaps sometime in the future this budding politico will get into another political fray, but for now his primary engagement is with the books.
