David Lee, born in Seoul, South Korea, moved with his family to West Des Moines on Christmas day of 2001.  He writes interestingly about the big change: “we had our minds solidly on Iowa, where we wouldn’t be tempted to mix [only] with other Koreans. . . . Although it was a risky decision, I believe we got the best out of it; had we gone to California or New York, then we would still be the same as we were in South Korea, without any growth.”  He describes this growth in terms of the work involved to acquire the new social skills suitable to their new culture and concludes “I am extremely grateful that a challenge that could have easily destroyed my life turned out to be a blessing that has forced me to stretch to new boundaries.”  David entered the University in 2008 and immediately poured himself into Political Science, taking nine of our courses in his first year.  (This has to be a record.)  He is currently adding a second major in Environmental Science and a minor in Economics.  This academic blend will, he hopes, equip him for an entrepreneurial future in the emerging world of new energy development and technology.
