Stacia Johns, a Political Science honors student hailing from nearby Williamsburg, has been awarded the Third House Scholarship for her forthcoming senior year.  This new scholarship has been provided by a nonpartisan consortium of Iowa lobbyists (who collectively are sometimes dubbed “the third branch” of state government).   In addition to her superb academic record, something that undoubtedly pleases this group is her engagement with the world of practical politics.  Stacia spent one summer working in a Congressional office on policy issues and constituent serves, and she spent a second summer working with a Washington D.C. lobbying firm focused on environmental issues.  One notable feature of the latter assignment was her organizational work for and attendance at one of the 2004 presidential nominating conventions.  Since first arriving on the campus, Stacia has been a member of the women’s swimming team and now serves as the team captain.  This has led to All-Big-Ten academic honors and to service on the University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.  Last year, Stacia was a senator in the UI student government.  She is completing a second major in Spanish.
